Week 7 Learning Journal

Part 1: Final Research Video Project Planning When we first got assigned the project, we began laying out what we should talk about in our videos. I proposed that we could make the professional video first and then simplify it for the short middle school level version. We've gathered information, now we just need to start putting together a video. We spent some time gathering some graphics and putting them into a powerpoint and my partner began to write out what he was going to say throughout the video. Now, we just need to make the slides coordinate with what he wants to say. Part 2: Ted.com Video Reflections and What I have learned this week. How are microchips made?  By George Zaidan and Sajan Saini https://www.ted.com/talks/george_zaidan_and_sajan_saini_how_are_microchips_made Computer chips consist of 100km of ultra thin copper lines stacked across 10 or more layers and can hold up to 50 billion transistors, which are switches that allows current to flow if they receives a vol...

Week 6 Learning Journal

Part 1: Help Your Teammates to Develop Capstone Ideas My teammate preferred my first capstone idea, which was an VR application which allows retailers to make an immersive store where consumers can purchase items for delivery from online stock but still see and use a true-to-scale 3D model of the product. Teammate's Capstone Idea 1 - Expanded 'My Fitness Pal' Like the application 'My Fitness Pal', users put in information of what they had eaten that day to track nutrition values, but in my teammate's version, the app will add suggestions on what users should eat next, where they can get the ingredients for those suggestions, and recipes that show how to prepare those ingredients for a meal.  Teammate's Capstone Idea 2 - Predictive Models for Baseball Pitches My teammate's second idea is a software that uses recorded data from a baseball pitcher's previous pitches to create predictive models that produce suggestions and probabilities of what pitches...

Week 5 Learning Journal Post

Part One: Support and Comment on Teammates' Goals 1st Comment  and  2nd Comment Part Two: Possible Capstone Ideas My first idea for a potential capstone project is a virtual reality (VR) application that would act as a platform for retailers to create an immersive shopping experience for VR equipment users to interact with true-to-scale 3D models of their products. This would be an ideal solution for those with social anxiety, as they can experience a close to realistic shopping experience without others around. Additionally, this would provide customers with another option to see a product up close rather than going to a retail store to find its not on display. Lastly, it will create another source of revenue for companies, especially as VR becomes more popular and prominent. My second idea is a file tracking software that acts as a hub for a user's various cloud storages and physical drives. The software would indicate what files on your computer have yet to be backup or sav...

Interview with Industry Professional

For my interview with an industry professional, I reached out to Timothy Elliot, an application developer working for the California Association of Realtors. The reason I chose to interview him was because of the experience he had on his LinkedIn profile, which seemed to have a lot of potential for an insightful interview. Elliot was kind and happy to share his career journey with me, although I would say his responses to my questions consisted more of technical challenges he came across and self-evaluations he had made rather than career advice and industry insights. Elliot did provide some key pieces of advice I feel I could benefit from. For example, he said the connections with the friends he has made have been essential to finding new career opportunities, especially one friend he had made through his church who helped him get two different jobs throughout his career. Another piece of advice Elliot had to share was that learning was an active process and that practicing or applyin...

Week 4 Learning Journal Post

Part 1: Educational Goals A goal I am working to achieve within this or next term is to finish an O'Rilley online course on the basics and fundamentals of Python programming. I will then be working on a similar course that pertains to Java programming. Simultaneously to these courses, I have a goal of creating an online study hour with those within our cohort. Two long-term goals I have are to obtain my bachelor's degree in computer science and to graduate with honors. After obtaining my bachelor's degree, I plan to then go for my master's so I can teach at a college level if I choose later on in my career. Part 2: Career Goals A goal I have for my career is to obtain at least two professional certifications before I graduate my bachelor's degree program, CompTIA Security+ and Cisco Certified Network Associate. Additionally, I have a goal of securing a cybersecurity internship with a local company before I graduate. Once I have gained enough experience and obtained ...
