CST 462S: Service Learning Reflections

  • What went well? What would you improve? What was the most impactful part? What challenges did you face?

My service learning site was working with high school students to build an autonomous farming robot. It was rather easy to meet the required hours since our site supervisor allocated a majority of the hours to learning how different component would need to be programmed. I would say the most impactful part was getting to learn about these components and determining how they could be utilized to achieve the desired goal. The most consistent challenge I faced was the minimal amount of direction and clarification. I believe we still performed well enough, though I would improve the level of communication to ensure the site supervisor and participants were on the same page.

  • What advice do you have for future SL students?

Keep your expectations realistic. Remember that service learning is to be of service in the manner that is requested, not how you believe you should be of service. If you do what's asked in the time that is allotted, then you should do great.
